The quality of the food which we eat is very important. Many problems result for instance from our enormous use of sugar. Many cancer patients have a Candida problem which comes, of course, from the wrong kinds of foods. Food must be digestible. A lot of problems are created by improper digestion and the wrong balance in foods. In the hospital where I work, I see many patients every day whose problems started with wrong digestion. Wrong digestion causes the body to give a little warning bell: you get too much wind and flatulence.
Digestive problems tell you that you are not absorbing your foods properly, and this is a much bigger problem. If you don’t have the proper absorption you will get nutrient deficiencies which will lead to health problems. I treat a lot of hiatus hernias which are another result of all that quick eating and improper digestion. We have to try to eat slower.
Saliva is your best digestion, the most wonderful digestive aid you can find, but you need to take time and eat slowly. Let the saliva mix with your food so that it can digest and absorb, because if it doesn’t digest, then it doesn’t absorb properly. Use something to help your digestion, in your meal, with your meal and sometimes after your meal. The whey of the milk, a left-over product from making cheese, is a tremendous aid to digestion and may save you from developing a Candida problem. Dr. Vogel made this into a remedy called Molkosan.
Proper Food Combining
If you bombard your body with too many different types of foods it will cause a lot of indigestion. Always eat your fruit and vegetables separately. And do not combine fruits with proteins and starches. Another thing which causes even worse problems is eating fruit salads made with many different kinds of fruits. Acid fruits do not combine well with sweet fruits such as bananas, grapes, and dates. Also melons and bananas are two fruits which are very jealous foods and I would advise you to always eat these fruits separately.
Health depends not only upon nutrition and digestion, but also upon elimination. People often cannot eliminate properly and most people are constipated. What you input in your mouth you have to export in 24 hours, otherwise you are constipated. Constipation is one of the worst things. Most cancers start in the bowels. Pay attention to the fibre in your diet and eat plenty of pulses and beans, nuts and seeds. In my practice, I prescribe many tins of Linoforce from Dr. Vogel which contains flaxseed (linseed) and senna leaves for constipation. Flaxseed is a tiny and insignificant seed, but God designed it so wonderfully. If you take that, you don’t need colonic irrigation, enemas or laxatives.
I see many patients daily who don’t have good blood circulation anymore and good health requires good circulation. If the bowels do not work because they lack fibre for good elimination, it will definitely affect the circulation. If you have eaten, don’t go and sit or lie down to digest your food, or worse, sit in front of the television. Get out and use your limbs, go up in the hills and inhale oxygen and digest your food.
The future of medicine is contained in one little word “energy”, and that word energy is closely linked to the immune system. If the immune system fails, we know there is something wrong with the chemical balance in the body. You may lack amino acids, or digestive enzymes, and this is brought to your attention by the alarm bell of poor digestion. Chemical balance rests upon the proper use of amino acids, glucose, enzymes, vitamins, minerals and oxygen.
When the chemical balance is good, you will have wonderful skin, good working lungs, a good heart, and your body will work very well. If the foods you eat are the right ones, natural unadulterated foods without artificial colouring, everything in us will be very grateful, because that is how God created us. When there are wrong food patterns, we often see problems in the heart, and when the heart has problems, the kidneys have problems, and the kidneys are always involved in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
The acids in the body have to be very well balanced with the alkalines. Starchy food needs a good alkaline digestive system, while proteins need an acid system for proper digestion. A proper acid-alkaline balance is very important and it is important to remember that fruits and vegetables are good alkaline foods. The bulk of each meal should consist of alkaline foods. I have given plenty of examples of acid and alkaline foods in my book, Nature’s Gift of Food. Why is there so much acid in people’s urine today? Because that acid-alkaline balance is completely wrong. I seldom see a urine sample these days which is not overly acidic.
With arthritic and rheumatic patients in particular, I look for signs of excess acidity in the system. Rheumatism, arthritis, duodenal and peptic ulcers, eczema and psoriasis are all born in an over-acid system, and these problems can be reduced to a large extent by introducing a good alkaline and acid balance in the diet. I very often tell sufferers of rheumatism, arthritis and psoriasis to introduce some good alkaline products and some good potassium products into their bodies. Eat bananas, potatoes, dried fruit, molasses, and cider vinegar – take that instead of normal vinegar – and you will get a lot of good food into your body. We must maintain the right balance in our foods, in our carbohydrates and proteins, and in our acid-alkaline balance.
People tell me that carbohydrates and proteins are wonderful body builders. Now, a carbohydrate is a wonderful body builder if it is a good carbohydrate, if it will burn up in the body like wood burns up in the fire. What does it leave? Dust. It can easily leave the body. That is why a good carbohydrate is a wonderful food. An animal protein like meat and other high protein products – you say these are body builders? No they are body breakers because they burn up like coal in the fire. What does coal do? It leaves slugs and crystals and you can see these crystals in people’s joints.
In my book Nature’s Gift of Food, I have pinpointed the hidden enemies which may cause allergies, because there are muscular dystrophies, multiple sclerosis, and twentieth century diseases which are simply the result of a weakening of the immune system. If the immune system is low, if the absorption and digestion is not right, then you get problems and become allergic. And an allergy can lead to very serious problems. Don’t ignore it. The skin will give you a good indication when you are allergic to your food.
People often don’t know which foods they are allergic to, but there are very easy ways to find out, just using common sense and a process of elimination. Be very careful about preservatives and food irradiation. I have written about these in my book. Why would you use microwaves to cook your food, something which is so unnatural? If I am given food from a microwave, I know it immediately, because that food doesn’t digest for me. Never take meat cooked in a microwave – it will only give allergies. That is one of the reasons we so often get allergies.
Salt, Sugar And Stress
There are three enemies of good health and they are the three S’s: salt, sugar and stress. Stress will attack the food you eat in every way. Stress will immediately break off and attack the potassium in your system. What does a cancer patient lack the most? Potassium. What does a rheumatoid arthritis patient lack the most? Potassium. That is the result of stress. Life is very stressful for all of us, for you and for me. But on top of all that stress, people use the biggest enemy of health and that is sugar.
Refined sugar leads to an increase in the blood sugar level, causes stress and hyperactivity and depletes the reserves of vitamins and minerals in the body. Another enemy which destroys our health is salt. It robs us of calcium and potassium and taken in excess is one of the main causes of hypertension. Dr. Vogel made a good salt substitute called Herbamare salt. It is the only salt I take and I take very little. I work 90 hours a week, so I have a lot of stress, and I couldn’t do all my work if I didn’t take care of myself with a sensible diet, take time to meditate, get rest and have peace within myself.
An imbalance of foods, of too much salt, sugar and stress can help to increase feelings of agitation and aggression. A professor of nutrition once told me he liked my book but that I should give people a little more chance to eat some nice things. I asked him if he was employed by the chocolate industry. The point is, if people would only eat perhaps a little, it may be all right, but their palate gets so used to all the wrong things that the palate doesn’t want what is really good for it. You can get used to what is good for you and then you won’t want the rubbishy foods.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
I have treated many of these cases and the common problem is very often coffee. How do you stop people from drinking coffee? I do it quite easily. I say drink Bambu coffee. It is a food coffee and it is much nicer. You won’t want the other rubbish anymore.
We must pay attention to the fluids we drink today. Do you want to drink tap water? Tap water is full of chemicals and can lead to many problems. They say they put fluoride in the water because it will help your teeth, but fluoride can be very dangerous for the body. I often say to people, if you put fluoride in the water to protect your teeth, why don’t you put a laxative in the water because half the people in the country are constipated today. It is very important to keep our priorities right.
Respect Your Food
I saw a paper that was written about people who got used to eating their food while watching the television set. You can do this if you want, but is it doing any good for you? The paper showed clearly that when people eat foods in front of the television, it doesn’t taste right and it doesn’t digest properly. I can understand that because if you are concentrating on the TV, how can you taste your food and how can it digest?
People have to learn to respect their food. I would love to see you respect your food when you eat. I was brought up to say a little prayer before my food, and I am grateful for it. It is a custom which I have seen gradually fading away. But it is wonderful that we give a little thanks for that food which is so balanced and given to us by our creator with so much care and prepared with so much love by our mother or wife. I am sure if you follow these principles you will be as happy and healthy as myself.
