Complementary Medicine

Complementary medicine is an alternative which incorporates traditional medicine with all the healing arts, including acupuncture, homeopathy, and herbal medicine. Its cornerstone is nutritional medicine. Nutritional medicine is derived from thousands of double-blind controlled laboratory studies recorded in the medical literature. It is a part of scientific medicine, based on a knowledge of biochemistry and physiology, yet it is rejected by scientific medicine. Why does conventional medicine reject this scientific branch of medicine called nutritional medicine? Simply because it doesn’t do what the medical organization wants it to do, namely make a lot of money for the pharmaceutical industry!

I have a group of patients who have just come out of the hospital with serious illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, asthmatic attacks, multiple sclerosis, strokes, hypertension and diabetes. These are patients who normally take from two to eight prescription drugs a day, and yet I’ve cut down their prescriptions by 95% and I am getting better results. If the entire medical profession strove to get better results it would be the end of the profits in the pharmaceutical business. They simply use their technique, which is called the big lie, and say that nutritional medicine doesn’t work because it’s not proven: “It’s not proven. Let’s not do it”.

Hiding behind the excuse of proof has justified conventional medicine’s being light years behind its own cutting edge of research. Its inability to handle the AIDS epidemic is pretty good proof of what happens if you demand proof before you try to help someone.

Nutritional Pharmacology

As a conventional physician, my patients were similar to other physicians’ patients: about 20% got better, 20% got worse and about 60% stayed the same. That’s what I was getting and that’s what I expected to get. We considered that people were doing well if they didn’t get worse. Now I expect 90% or more of my patients to get better. I don’t prescribe drugs but I prescribe a lot of other therapies, the main one being nutrition, which we call nutritional pharmacology.

Nutritional Pharmacology is the substitution of a nutritional substance for a pharmaceutical one. When the nutritional approach works, you reach your therapeutic goals and get your patient off medication. Being healthy means not requiring medication.

Somebody had written a paper saying that vitamin C is an antihistamine, that it is useful for the common cold. Dr. Herbert, who is an outspoken critic of nutritional medicine, agreed that vitamin C has antihistamine activity, but said “If you want an antihistamine, why not take an antihistamine?” That is the conventional wisdom. The absolute illogic of this position is that he is recommending a drug with side effects, when vitamin C only has beneficial effects which enhance your immune system, prevent cancer, detoxify toxic chemicals in your environment, serve as an antioxidant and so on.

Medicine uses the term side effects to describe the adverse effects of drugs. These are not side effects: they are the direct effects of the drug. The direct effects are bad because drugs are blocking agents – they work by blocking a reaction in the body, whereas the nutrients are enabling agents and they allow reactions to happen. Drugs can cause a major disabling side-effect. A drug is a biological and biochemical intervention and the body will try to overcome it. The end result is that the body will have a worse case of the illness that is being treated.

If you take a decongestant for a cold, it will get worse, insomnia gets worse in the long run if you take sleeping pills; obesity gets worse in the long run if you take diet pills; high blood pressure gets worse if you take diuretics or other blood pressure medications. Do it with nutrients and that doesn’t happen. Orthodox medicine will say it doesn’t work, but it does and it’s proved in the medical literature. They just selectively refuse to read the studies.

History Of Modern Disease

The ‘mother’ of all twentieth century illness is diabetes. Diabetes or sugar disturbance really is the origin of so many of our degenerative diseases. Around 1890, Coca Cola was invented and at the same time, mills were producing fine grain flour. That’s one hundred years ago, the beginning of the modern disease era: the era of refined carbohydrates, something that man and mammals had never done before and which mammals still don’t do unless they are household pets. This was a great experiment in health which is obviously failing.

When we began to eat refined carbohydrates, it was the first time we began taking in sugar. Bread has also changed in its nature from coarse to plain white flour – there was a big ‘white flour epidemic’ at the beginning of this century. The whole disease spectrum centered around a disturbance in insulin metabolism. The body tried to overcome the problem by putting out more insulin and we had hyperinsulinism, which is responsible for obesity, a twentieth century phenomena.

Did you ever notice how few fat people are in street scenes in old pictures from last century or even early 1900’s? We also saw the beginnings of hypertension because hypertension is a consequence of hyperinsulinism more often than anything else. It used to be thought that salt was the culprit. Sugar and refined carbohydrates are the actual culprits in hypertension. We also have an epidemic of low blood sugar which is first cousin to diabetes; it is the first stage of type 2 diabetes, the more common type.

Targeted Nutrition

If you try to take your nutritients according to one nutritional formula which is the same for everyone, like the daily allowance of vitamins and minerals which governmental agencies recommend, that is not the dosage shown to be effective in nutritional studies in medical literature. With nutritional pharmacology, we select nutritional combinations for the conditions we find. There are nutritional combinations for arthritis, hypertension, high cholesterol and many others.

There is a diet which corrects for the over consumption of refined carbohydrates and that’s called ‘cut out the refined carbohydrates’ If you become overweight, it’s called ‘cut out all the carbohydrates’ because that’s what happens to work best. If it works, that’s what you do.

Nutritional Supplements For Twentieth Century Illnesses:

Diabetes: Our DM formula includes chromium, biotin, zinc, magnesium, manganese, inositol, vanadium, and diet. 50% of our patients will get off their insulin and the other 50% will improve somewhat. In hypoglycemia, 100% of people who follow our program get better.

Elevated cholesterol: These people don’t have any complaints. They play tennis, they jog, nothing hurts. I give them a diet which doesn’t lower their fat intake. They can eat lots of eggs. Elevated cholesterol signifies that there’s a dietary problem. It means that you have been eating too much twentieth century refined food, junk food, including margarine. Margarine was invented in the twentieth century. Our formula includes niacin, lecithin, borage oil, magnesium, coenzyme Q10, pectin, guar gum, and other nutritional fibres. Our results are that 80% of people will show a major reduction of cholesterol and certainly of triglycerides.

High blood pressure: This is a prime example of doctors using a drug when they wouldn’t if they knew their nutritional pharmacology. A complementary physician can expect to get 85% of people off medication, and keep their blood pressure in the normal range. We use magnesium, taurine, coenzyme Q10, vitamin B6, garlic, and a few other nutrients in our formula which we call AH (antihypertensive).

Endomitriosis (fibrocystic breast disease) and uterine fibroids: all of these conditions have one thing in common. They are aggravated by an excess of estrogen, and there is a nutritional approach to correct that. Nutrients which stimulate estrogen are folic acid, PABA and boron. These three are helpful in getting through the menopause, but they must be avoided if a woman has a uteroid fibroid. Her doctor may want to give her a hysterectomy. However, we shrink fibroids 60% of the time with a formula called our Basic Formula #2 which is free of folic acid and PABA, but contains extra ingredients which convert estrogen to a more inactive form. These ingredients are choline, inositol and methionine.

Prostatic enlargement: Our formula UF#21 (urinary frequency) contains glycine, alanine and glutamic acid. Four studies in the medical literature showed 60 to 80% success in relieving the symptoms and avoidance of surgery with just these three amino acids. Two effective minerals are zinc and manganese which are also part of our program.

Arthritis: There are a large number of nutrients that have a favourable effect on the inflammatory reaction, and specifically on rheumatoid arthritis. We put them into our AA (anti-arthritic) formula. They include niacin, B6, pantothenic acid, PABA, copper, zinc, manganese, vitamin C and vitamin E. To this we add our anti-oxidizing formula containing vitamin A, C, E, glutathione, cysteine, and bioflavanoids.

Mental Disease: Orthomolecular psychiatry is one of the oldest nutritional sciences and it began with the use of niacin for schizophrenia. For manic depression, one can use vanadium as a direct alternative to lithium. Substances which are the nutritional precursors of the required neurotransmitters are given. Tyrosine is very useful for depression associated with withdrawal and apathy.

Agitated depression with sleeplessness and nervousness can be helped with seratonin, and the immediate precursor is tryptophane. We use 5-hydroxytryptophane which is the immediate precursor of seratonin. Vitamin B6, zinc and manganese are also very useful and should be part of that program. This is an entire area of promising therapies that are ‘yet to be proven’ which as yet have no home in orthodox medicine.
